About Snippets from the Studio

Well, it’s nice to meet you. This is me hating having my photo taken and trying to hide behind one of my papercuts.

I’m Sarah, an artist based in the heart of rural Northumberland, in the UK. My studio is next to the house, in a cosy converted wooden barn - just inside these doors …

I’ve been a practising artist making artist’s books and paper cuts for over fifteen years, but only part-time for the last few years. However I’ve taken the plunge and now it’s my full-time occupation again. Scary but good !

I draw and paint, and try and find interesting ways of bringing it all together. Everything starts with a blank piece of paper though; it might become a book, a sculptural paper cut piece, a drawing, painting, or all of these.

I have words running through my head constantly, some of which end up in my work…

Books are bigger on the inside …

I make all sorts of book sculptures; birds and animals fly out of them; plants and insects crawl and flow out of the pages. There is something completely magical about the transformation of a flat piece of paper into a three-dimensional form and it’s endlessly interesting to me.

In ‘Snippets from the Studio’ you’ll find musings about:

  • Work in progress - what I’m making and playing with and how it develops;

  • Where inspiration comes from, how to find it and what to do when it doesn’t appear;

  • Writing about what it’s like to be an artist, to think and see as an artist …

  • Trying to make a living as an artist, especially in a pretty remote rural area, and

  • Books ! Lots of Books ! (Both making and reading).

I live very happily with these two for company -

studio assistants ….

but they are frankly rubbish at helping out in the studio with the detailed work. However they are pretty cheap as I can pay them in biscuits.

There’s a blog on my website too if you want more extended musings…and a newsletter over there which you can sign up to, and get some nice papercutting templates to have a go at.

From my artist's studio in the wilds of Northumberland, I write about exploring the magical transformation of a flat piece of paper into something wonderful. My books and papercuts are inspired by poetry, film and the landscape & wildlife around me.
